Real player is also used in operating systems like Linux, Max OS X. The findings of Adware are just for the RealPlayer used in Windows operating system. RealPlayer is generally used as an alternative to Apple's QuickTime and Microsoft's Windows Media Player. The Message Center software has come under fire in the past, and in 1999 it was discovered that the software was quietly sending information to Real Networks servers. RealPlayer has a history of making invasive changes to users' computers. Although the issue was fixed in version 11 of the player, RealPlayer 10.5 is automatically downloaded via the Firefox browser's "Missing Plug-in" feature and is still widely used. This software then keeps on delivering ads to the consumers system.
ALTERNATIVE TO REALPLAYER REGISTRATION
If we do not fill up the registration form, it says that the “uninstaller component is missing”. Real Networks say that a check box on the registration page is used to notify users that Message Center would be installed. If the registration page of RealPlayer 10.5 is not filled by the consumer and if he installs the RealPlayer directly software called Message Center is installed without the knowledge of the consumer. Even the Real player 10.5 is considered to be a ‘badware’.
This software is not removed from the system even if we uninstall the RealPlayer. This uses up computer's hard-drive space or processing power, or even creating a security risk for consumers if bugs are discovered. The version 11 of RealPlayer installs software called Rhapsody Player Engine which is required to access Real Network’s online music service. A consumer group has criticized Real Networks for this. The Real player 11 when installed in a computer installs an adware and software without the knowledge of the consumers.
